Replacing Your Pressure Washer Pump: Tips and Tricks

What Type of Pump for Pressure Washer

Most pressure washers have one of two kinds pumps: axial cam pumps or triplex plunger pumps.

Axial cam pumps are the simplest type and the kind you usually see in pressure washers for homeowners. They are cheaper than triplex plunger pumps. Axial cam pumps work by having several cylinders arranged in a circle around a shaft. As the shaft spins, the cylinders move in and out, pushing water and making pressure.

Triplex plunger pumps are the more heavy-duty option. They cost more and you usually only see them for commercial or industrial use. Triplex pumps have three plungers that move up and down at the same time to generate higher pressures than axial cam pumps. They are built to last longer and handle tougher jobs.

How to Replace Pressure Washer Pump

NOTE: These instructions will work for all 3-legged vertical mounted pressure washer pumps, regardless of the model.

Disconnect Line

You have to disconnect the spark plug wire and the water supply hose. It can be found easily because it is outside.

Remove Old Pump

Get started by unbolting the pump. It looks like depending on your pressure washer how many bolts you need to open. The most popular is a 3-legged pressure washer, but you can do the same with another type.

Apply New Pump

Lining up the key on the keyway on the pump, and then I'll rotate the pump around until the mounting holes line up with the locations on the motor.

Tighten everything up with the wrenches, and that's how easy it is to replace the pump on your pressure washer.

Some models ( not all) have a relief valve, just throw this onto the new pump and now I can mount the new pump back on the motor. Wrap a little bit of thread tape around the thread so it'll seal up well

This is a repair that can save you a lot of money by doing it yourself.
